A candlelight vigil will be held Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Alhambra police station for Officer Alec Sanders, who was killed along with a woman in a crash last week.
The vigil, which is open to the public, is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. The station is at 211 S. First St. in Alhambra.
“Over the past several days, our department has felt the strength of this community in countless ways,” the Police Department says in a Facebook post. “The support, compassion, and kindness shown have meant more than we can put into words.
“This vigil will give our community a chance to come together in a moment of unity and remembrance.”
On Thursday, Nov. 20, police were chasing a suspect driving a reported stolen Hyundai sport-utility vehicle.
The Hyundai was traveling north on Edgewood Drive, while Sanders’ police SUV was westbound on Valley Boulevard. The vehicles collided in the intersection.
Gabriela Moreno, 42, a passenger in the Hyundai, was ejected and died. Sanders, 28, died at Los Angeles General Medical Center.
Sanders was on patrol, covering an overnight shift for another officer. He had been with the department for eight months and before that worked for the Long Beach Police Department.
The driver of the Hyundai, Steven Zapata, 27, of El Monte and his other passenger, a 52-year-old man, were injured, authorities said. Zapata was arrested on suspicion of murder.
