Pro soccer’s LA Galaxy announced on Monday that City National Bank, the team’s official bank and wealth management partner, has donated $30,000 to the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) Region 13, serving Pasadena, Altadena and La Cañada.
Of the donation, $5,000 will be designated specifically for replacing soccer equipment that was damaged during this year’s Los Angeles wildfires that greatly impacted the area. The other $25,000 will go into a ticket bank, providing free access to matches for the young players and their families throughout the season.
“We’re incredibly proud to stand alongside our partner City National Bank in supporting AYSO Region 13, an area that was ravaged by the fires earlier this year,” said Tom Braun, LA Galaxy president and chief operating officer. “Our team has deep roots in Los Angeles, and we’re grateful to our partners for helping us bring moments of joy, hope and healing to families who have been through so much.”
Nearly 500 children living in the region were impacted by the fires, losing not only soccer gear, jerseys and even fields, but many lost their personal belongings, homes and communities.
“About 500 soccer players in AYSO Region 13 live in Altadena,” reads an AYSO Region 13 Jan. 26 Facebook post. “Well, used to, anyhow. About half the homes were destroyed, and the other half will be empty for a while until the area can be cleaned.”
AYSO Region 13 serves over 3,000 children year-round and is an “all-volunteer” organization that allows families to pay what they can when it comes to membership fees.
“This gift from City National Bank will go a long way for the families of our region,” said Patrick Shopbell, commissioner of AYSO Region 13. “After the challenges our community has faced, having this support means our kids can continue to experience the joy of soccer and the valuable life lessons that come with being part of a team and a community.”
LA Galaxy officials noted that the donation is “two-pronged,” providing not only equipment donations, but also “offering hope and excitement through LA Galaxy game experiences, “creating positive memories during the recovery period,” according to a press release from LA Galaxy.
This is not the first time City National Bank has contributed to wildfire recovery. In January, they donated $3 billion to support wildfire relief efforts in Southern California.
“City National remains committed to supporting communities across Los Angeles as they rebuild, through ongoing relief efforts, partnerships, and community investment programs that make a lasting impact,” reads a press release from LA Galaxy. “This season, that commitment serves as a reminder of the power of generosity and teamwork to help communities thrive.”
