LA Daily News football semifinal playoff previews and predictions for Friday’s games

Here’s a look at the football playoff semifinal matchups for teams from the LA Daily News area on Friday.

Could this game be Birmingham’s biggest City test yet? Possibly. Crenshaw’s only loss this year came to Hamilton in early September and the team is on a seven-game winning streak since.

Up to this point, Birmingham’s success has come from its experience. Sure, the Patriots have standouts like dual-threat QB Kevin Hawkins, RB Braylen Morgan and WR Paul Turner, but this might be coach Jim Rose’s most well-rounded team that is not highlighted by one superstar player. The defense is anchored by Jesse Mancilla and Ray Worthen, the team’s tackle leaders.

Crenshaw will have the athletes, but it might not be able to compete physically with Birmingham for four quarters. Depth is in the favor of Birmingham, too.

Tarek’s pick: Birmingham

Oaks Christian has found themselves one win away from a CIF final down in Division 4. Despite the program’s worst regular-season (just four wins), the powers of star players Devon Benjamin (Oregon) and Deshonne Redeaux (USC) have made huge differences in a field that doesn’t have athletes to match.

However, there are rumblings that Redeaux may not play Friday. The star running back has been playing banged up all year.

His participation will help the Lions, but La Habra is a well-coached, disciplined football team with an identity under coach Frank Mazzotta. The Highlanders are also a program that historically isn’t in this low of a division. La Habra QB DJ Mitchell has 29 passing touchdowns this season.

Tarek’s pick: La Habra

A Ventura County showdown. Two public schools, too. Bragging rights are on the line Friday night in Agoura Hills.

This is a toss-up game with a battle between two high-level QBs in Ventura’s Derek Garcia and Agoura’s Gavin Gray. Garcia has tossed for 32 touchdowns and more than 2,700 yards. Gray is up to 44 touchdown tosses and 3,357 yards.

The team with more stops wins this game.

Tarek’s pick: Agoura

It’s expected to be in the 40s for kickoff in Apple Valley with a likelihood of rain. Not great for passing the ball, and although Saugus can run the ball, too. That’s what Apple Valley wants.

Tarek’s pick: Apple Valley

Coachella Valley has a stud running back in Ivan Camargo, who has amassed 2,066 yards and 24 TDs this season. If Grace can slow him down, its more balanced game on the ground and through the air should be the difference. Seniors Jake Williams and Landon Cooper leading the way.

Tarek’s pick: Grace

The Cavs are more battle-tested after playing Birmingham and Crenshaw this season.

Tarek’s pick: Cleveland

This is a toss-up, but something about Marshall’s schedule, and coming from the Northern League with Eagle Rock and Franklin, makes them a slight favorite.

Tarek’s pick: Marshall
